Gdynia winning debut opens in cinemas

    Splinters, the directing debut awarded drama from Maciej Pieprzyca, opens in Poland on Febraury 13.

    The movie presents a couple of days in the lives of three young people. Bartek is finishing college, Marta is planning a wedding, and Robert can't wait for another soccer match of his favorite club. Their lives are arranged and predictable, but each of them will have to reflect upon their past outlooks on life and their futures. Each one is divided on every level but joined by one craving: the search for love.

    Splinters was shot on location in April, 2008, with post-production lasting till November. The producer is Akson Studio (www.akson-studio.pl) in cooperation with TVP Film Agency and Canal + Poland. "The total budget was 2.6 million PLN with a 400,000 PLN of production input from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl)," Jolanta Trykacz from Akson Studio told FNE. The distribution of the title is handled by Fundacja Film Polski (www.filmpolski.com.pl).

    Maciej Pieprzyca, a graduate of The National Film School in Lodz, started his career with the TV movie Inferno, part of the cycle "Poland 2000." The film was awarded at festivals in Houston, Avance, and Cierlick. At the Gdynia festival two years ago Pieprzyca presented Barborka, made for the TV cycle "Polish Holidays." The script for Splinters won him Second Prize during the Polish edition of the Hartley-Merril Competition, which led to the production of the title as his first cinema feature. The director won the Best Debut Prize during the Gdynia Polish Film Festival 2008, with Karolina Piechota winning the Best Acting Debut Prize. and Leszek Starzyński awarded for Best Editing.
