Solid opening week for Karamazovs in Poland

By Katarzyna Grynienko
Petr Zelenka's The Karamazovs racked up nearly 9,000 admissions in its first week in distribution in Polish cinemas.
The Karamozovs premiered in Poland on February 6, 2009. Polish distributor Gutek Film (www.gutekfilm.pl) confirmed 8,878 admissions by February 15, a healthy result for an artistic, challenging title released in Poland on only 8 copies.

    The Karamazovs
is a Polish-Czech co-production inspired by Dostoevsky's novel, with a total buget of 3.5 million PLN (€730,000). Poland was represented by Warsaw Pact Production (www.warsawpact.pl) and the Czech Republic by Prvni Verejnoprávni. The movie was co-produced by Czech broadcaster Ceská Televize and co-funded by the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl) with 1 million PLN. The title also received support from Eurimages and the Czech Cinematography Development Fund. The Karamazovs' numerous awards include prizes at film festivals in Karlovy Vary and Gdynia in 2008. The title premiered in April 2008 in Czech Republic and on October 16 in Slovakia. It opens May 7 in Russia.
