WARSAW: Wieslaw Saniewski has wrapped shooting of The Winner, one of the most anticipated Polish productions of the year. The Polish-American drama revolves around a talented young pianist, an American of Polish descent who breaks his European tour contract and falls into debt. In his struggle to repay on time he meets an eccentric retired professor of mathematics, who introduces him to the world of horse track gambling.
The lead played by Paweł Szajda, with veteran Polish actor Janusz Gajos as the professor. The cast also includes Wojciech Pszoniak, Grażyna Barszczewska, Marta Żmuda-Trzebiatowska, Wenanty Nosul and Peter Lucas. Shooting started 16 April in Poland, Germany and the United States. The executive producer of the Polish-American co-production is Polish company Saco Films Ltd founded by Saniewski. The film is co-produced by The Society For Arts (USA), Andrzej Niżnik (Switzerland), and Polish producers and institutions Odra Film (www.odra-film.wroc.pl ), Archi-Projekt, Toya Studios (www.toyastudios.pl), Divizion (www.divizion.pl ), WFDiF (www.wfdif.com.pl ), Equus Polska (www.equus.cz ) and BBF Investments. The budget is 13 million PLN (€ 3.2 million) with 3 million PLN in financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl ). Post production will run though November with the premiere planned for the first quarter of 2011. ITI Cinema (www.iticinema.com.pl ) will distribute.
