Wajda, whose father was one of the 20,000 Polish officers massacred by the Soviets in Katyń Forest and elsewhere 1940, has three previous Oscar nominations. He was singled out for The Promised Land (1974), The Maids of Wilko (1970) and Man of Iron (1981), for which he also received the Palme d'Or at Cannes. He received an Oscar for Life Achievement in 2000.
