TVP Launches New Channel

By Katarzyna Grynienko
Polish public broadcaster TVP launched a new theme channel "TVP Seriale" (TVP Series) on 6 December 2010, in anticipation of expanded advertising income.

"All of our studies show that TVP should create this channel. Its offer will consist of the very thing that distinguishes TVP on the Polish market: the best television series," said Pawel Baluch, a TVP Board member. TVP (www.tvp.pl) expects the series channel to generate profit and have 0.5-1% of the cable-satelite share within a year. The channel is targeting women between ages 35 and 49. 70% of the programming consists of series produced locally including hit television series such as M jak Miłość (L For Love) and Ranczo (Ranch).

The new channel is currently available in 2.3 million Polish homes, through leading television providers Cyfra+ (ww.cyfra.tv) and the N Platform (www.n.pl) as well as 50 cable chains. TVP is talking with other cable operators to add the channel to their packages. Presently, the public broadcaster does not planning to offer the channel via digital television.
