Popieluszko completes principal photography

By FNE Staff

Principal photography has been completed on Popieluszko, a Polish film about the murdered Solidarity priest.

The film is directed by actor-turned-director Rafal Wieczynski and stars Adam Woronowicz as the young priest Father Jerzy Popieluszko, whose criticisms of the Communist government and death galvanized the Solidarity movement. The cast also includes leading Polish actors Zbigniew Zamachowski Jan Englert, and Joanna Szczepkowska. The film takes an unusual twist, with Cardinal Jozef Glemp portraying himself in re-enacted conversations between the two priests.

Popieluszko was killed by the secret police in 1984. Production company Focus Producers plans to release the film in October, to commemorate the 24th anniversary of his death. Christopher Lambert previously portrayed the priest in a US-French co-production, the 1989 film To Kill a Priest, directed by Agnieszka Holland
