Digital Screens Top 50 Percent in Europe

By FNE Staff

More than 52% of screens in Europe have been digitalized as of the end of 2011 according to a new report by the European Audiovisual Observatory (www.obs.coe.int) and Media Salles.

Growth took off in mid-2009, driven first by 3D films, but in 2011 growth was driven by 2D films.

Digital conversion lags in single screen cinemas, at only 11%, while multiplex conversion reached 89%. The move toward the end of 35mm film distribution is expected to cause financial strain for small cinemas.
