CANNES: Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan swept to victory with his three hour plus Winter Sleep which won the Palme d’or at the 67 Cannes International Film Festival.

The film is a visually stunning drama about a Turkish family running a hotel in a snowy Turkish village. It was the first Palme d’or for Ceylan who has been awarded other prizes in Cannes previously for his films Uzak, Climates, Three Monkeys and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia Winter Sleep was tipped by critics early in the festival as a front runner for the main prize. At the Cannes closing ceremony Ceylan said he was especially glad to win as this was the 100th anniversary of Turkish cinema and he dedicated the award to Turkish young people. Winter Sleep also won the FIPRESCI international critics award for best film.

This year for the first time Film New Europe teamed up with FIPRESCI whose critics rated the films in all the main sections of the official programme each day giving FNE readers a chance to see how many stars critics gave the films as they were screened throughout the festival. Ceylan’s Winter Sleep was also the top rated film on the Film New Europe FIPRESCI Critics charts. You can see the Cannes chart by clicking HERE.

The Hungarian director Kornel Mundrudzo scored the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section with his film White God produced by Film Partners of Hungary. White God was also the most highly rated Certain Regard film in the FNE FIPRESCI Critics ratings.

The next FNE Critics ratings will be in at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
