By

COTTBUS: Albanian director Gentian Koci will make his feature film debut with the social drama The Daybreak, the first Albanian project ever pitched at Connecting Cottbus.

The film has a budget of 520,000 EUR with 80,000 EUR of in-kind production services from Greece already attached. The director and the producer, Blerina Hankollari of ArtAlb Film, told FNE they have applied for a grant of 150,000 EUR from Albania’s Film Fund, with a decision expected soon, and will ask for 30,000 EUR from Albanian public TV and 25,000 EUR from an Albanian digital platform. The film is coproduced by the Albanian company 90 Production.

The project arrived at CoCo after also being selected for Cinelink in Sarajevo, where they forged an agreement with a French coproducer and a world sales agent. The filmmakers are still seeking German or other coproducers to cover 250,000 EUR of the budget.

The story is set in Tirana where a single mother with an infant son is caught in an economic bind, trying to pay bills and keep a job, but gets caught in an ethical trap.
