Films from CEE on BBC Culture's 21st Century 100 Greatest Films List

    LONDON: Nine films from CEE are among the 100 greatest films of the 21st century chosen by BBC Culture. They include films by Cristian Mungiu, Michael Haneke and Belá Tárr.

    Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007, Mobra Films) is the highest ranked film from CEE, on the 15th position. Caché (2005) by Michael Haneke is on the 23rd position and another film by Michael Haneke, Amour (2012), is ranked 42.

    Son of Saul (2015), the debut feature by Laszlo Nemes is ranked 34, while a second Hungarian film, Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) by Belá Tárr is ranked 56.  A third Hungarian film and Tárr’s second film in the top 100 is The Turin Horse (2011), ranked 63.

    Two Polish films also made it to the top, Ida (2013, Opus Film) by Pawel Pawlikowski, which is ranked 55, and Roman Polanski's The Pianist (2002, R.P. Productions), ranked 90.

    The 177 film critics from around the world voted Mulholland Drive (2001) by David Lynch the best film of the 21st Century, followed by In the Mood for Love (2000) by Wong Kar-wai and There Will Be Blood (2007) by Paul Thomas Anderson.
