FNE at Connecting Cottbus 2018: Victim Featured

2018-11-09

COTTBUS: Producer Jakub Viktorin of the Slovak half of the young Czech/Slovak production company nutprodukcia and director Michal Blasko are presenting their project Victim at the 20th edition of Connecting Cottbus, taking place 8-9 November 2018.

The film, set in a small Czech town, tackles a social issue that resonates in contemporary Slovakia: anti-Roma racism. A 13-year-old boy, who gets drunk and has an accident, claims he was attacked by the Roma. The incident stokes racist, neo-Nazi sentiment in the town, but his mother begins to realise that her son is lying and the bond of trust between the two is destroyed. Blasko, who co-wrote the script, said the story is based on real events that took place in a small town where he used to live.

The film has a budget of 1,175,000 EUR, with 85,000 EUR in place. It has received development support from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, the Czech Film Fund and MEDIA. The film is coproduced by the Czech branch of nutprodukce and the Ukrainian company ESSE Production House. The producers are seeking a fourth coproduction partner.

Victim is in late development, with completion planned for 2020.

Victim will be the director’s first feature film, following experience directing for the TV. His short student film Fear premiered at the San Sebastian IFF and won the Best Short Film at the Vilnius IFF. His 2017 student film Atlantis, 2003 premiered in Cannes and won the Best Short Film award at Cottbus.
