Central European films screen at NY Jewish Film Festival

    Acclaimed fiction and documentary films from Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania will screen at the NY Jewish Film Festival, running through January 28.

    The schedule includes the New York premiere of Lukás Pribyl's Forgotten Transports: To Poland, one of a four-part film series of Czech Jews who were sent to little known camps and ghettos across Central Europe. Pribyl will attend the film's two screenings. The Czech Republic is also represented by Marek Najbrt's Protector, the official entry for the Oscar foreign language category, with a three-person delegation in attendance.

    Protector will be screened along with the Hungarian short film With a Little Patience directed by Laszlo Nemes.

    Three Polish co-productions are included in the festival line-up. They include the US premiere of The Peretzniks, a coproduction with the US directed by Slawomir Grünberg. It will be screened with he short film Happy Jews, a co-production with Israel directed by Jonathan Rozenbaum. The closing night selection is a coproduction from Germany, Poland and Belgium, Within the Whirlwind directed by Marleen Gorris.

    Rounding out the Central European participation is Gruber's Journey from Romanian director Radu Gabrea, who will attend the screenings.
