FNE at KVIFF 2010: Sarajevo's New Film Center Promotes Coproductions

By Anna Franklin

KARLOVY VARY: Adis Bakrac director of East of the West competitor The Abandoned is also head of the newly established Sarajevo Film Center. The Abandoned produced by Heft Production (www.heft.ba) is a coproduction between Bosnia Herzegovinia and Croatia, Serbia and France.

"Coproductions are the only way forward for film production in BiH," said Bakrac. "We produce only about one or two features a year." Despite the region's war-torm history films in the region are able to cross borders fairly easily because the languages are similar and people from Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and BiH can understand each other's films. There is a combined potential audience of 15 to 20 million.

The new film center which was established at the beginning of this year is publically funded and is the depository of the archive of 80 features and over 500 docs and shorts produced in the country between 1947 and 1999. Bakrac is in the process of restoring and digitializing the film library. Income generated from the sales and distribution of the library will go to support new film productions.

There will also be additional government support for production and distribution especially films of young new directors and plans for the construction of two government supported film studios.
