FNE at Europa Cinemas: Conference Awards Lithuanian and Slovenian Cinemas

By Anna Franklin

PARIS: The 15th Europa Cinemas Network Conference held in Paris from 18 to 21 November awarded three independent cinemas for excellence including one from Lithuania and one from Slovenia.

The Europa Cinemas award for Best Programming went to the Skalvijos Kino Centras in Vilnius managed by Vilma Levickaite. The one screen, 88 seat cinema has been a member of the Europa Cinemas Network since 1997. The cinema especially targets young people and young families and screens European and art house fare. As there is no national funding strategy to support art house programming local distributors have stopped acquiring art house films and cinemas like Skalvijos often have to also distribute films to be able to programme their cinema.

The Best Young Audience Activities award went to the Kinodvor cinema in Ljubljana. The cinema has been a member of the Europa Cinemas Network since 2004 and has focused on developing young audiences with educational programmes aimed at schools.

The third award for Entrepreneur of the Year went to the Watershed Media Centre in Bristol UK.
