FESTIVALS: Poland, Hungary, Turkey win Berlinale Competition slots

    Hungary, Poland and Turkey are among the 19 countries represented in the 22-film Berlinale competition line-up. The festival (www.berlinale.de) runs 10-20 February 2011.

    Hungary offers the world premiere of Béla Tarr's A Torinói Ló (The Turin Horse) Hungary/France/Germany/Switzerland. The film stars János Derzsi, Erika Bók, Mihály Kormos.

    Paula Markovitch has the world premiere of debut film El premio (The Prize) Mexico/France/Poland/Germany, starring Paula Galinelli Hertzog, Sharon Herrera, Laura Agorreca, Viviana Suraniti, Uriel Lasillo.

    The Berlinale previously announced the selection of Turkey/Germany/Netherlands coproduction Bizim Büyük Çaresizliğimiz (Our Grand Despair) by Seyfi Teoman, also a world premiere.

    The three Czech and Slovak films are featured in the Forum programme: Erika Hníková's documentary Nesvatbov (Matchmaking Mayor), which premiered at the Jihlava documentary festival; and world premieres of two debut films Osmdesát dopisů (Eighty Letters) by Václav Kadrnka and Dom (The House) by Zuzana Liová. The Forum section also includes the international premiere of Made in Poland by Przemysław Wojcieszek (Poland).

    The section of World Shorts includes Apele Tac directed by Anca Miruna Lăzărescu (Germany/Romania); Erdö directed by György Mór Kárpáti (Hungary); Pera Berbangê directed by Arin İnan Arslan (Turkey); and Świteź directed by Kamil Polak (Poland).
