The award, given as "a form of high appreciation for his directing activities, and for his great contribution in promoting world culture through cinematic art" was presented by the Minister of Culture, Kelemen Hunor.

Accepting the award, Menzel said, "I was pleasantly surprised, as well as honored to find out about this award and I am very happy to see that my films are still appreciated in Romania."
