First Romanian Industry Fair Wraps

By Iulia Blaga

PLOIESTI, ROMANIA: The first edition of Golden Carpathian - Ploieşti European Film & Fair (www.goldencarpathian.com), the first film industry fair in Romania, wrapped in Ploiesti on August 28, after three days of screenings and business meetings.

Some 60 participants came from Great Britain, France, Poland, Russia, Italy, Serbia, Sweden, Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey, Republic of Moldova and the United States. The Romanian participants were Domino Film (www.dominofilm.ro), Strada Film (www.stradafilm.ro), Rollin, DaKino Foundation (www.dakino.ro) and TVR (www.tvr.ro).

Radu Nicolae, the president of Golden Carpathian - Ploieşti European Film & Fair told FNE that the feedback was good. "Some of the participants told me that small fairs like ours are important for those who can't go to Cannes or Berlin or for whom is tough to get to meet important people in those big fairs. In big fairs the industry people from Eastern Europe can't get in touch with production companies, so a small fair becomes interesting for them because they can meet smaller buyers," he said

Some producers took the first steps toward future coproductions at the event. The team of the Polish Odeon Studio (www.odeon.com.pl) which produced the Marcin Wrona's feature The Christening, talked with two Romanian production companies in order to find a Romanian partner for its new project. The French buyers from Saudet Media met with representatives of the Romanian public television (www.tvr.ro).

"A big delegation from the Republic of Moldavia came also and had discussions with representatives of RADEF RomaniaFilm (www.romaniafilm.ro), because they have films in Romanian they want to distribute on the Romanian market," Nicolae told FNE. He added that RADEF RomaniaFilm already cut a deal with Croatia's Copycat Production for the Romanian distribution of Nevio Marasovic's The Show Must Go On. Copycat Production also started to discuss over the distribution of the same feature in the Polish cinemas.

For the next edition, Golden Carpathian - Ploieşti European Film & Fair will try to expand, but with a reason. "The advice of all the participants was that we should encourage business contacts in the Eastern Europe. So we will not look especially for big buyers but we will merely try to find money for Eastern European coproductions," Nicolae said.
