    BUCHAREST: Cristian Mungiu’s Beyond the Hills/După dealuri (www.dupadealuri.ro) will open in Hungary on 11 October before its domestic release in Romania on 26 October, when its makers hope it will break the record of Tudor Giurgiu’s Of Snails and Men/Despre oameni şi melci (www.despreoamenisimelci.ro).

    The film has sold to 38 territories: Poland, Hungary, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Greece, UK, Italy, the Commonwealth of Independent States (Russia and eight countries), Canada, USA, Israel, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan.

    In Italy the distributor Bim (www.bimfilm.com) will release the film on 30 October, while in France, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg the film will be launched in November. It will be distributed in North America by Sundance Selects (www.sundanceselects.com) and in the UK by Artificial Eye (www.artificial-eye.com) in 2013. Wild Bunch (www.wildbunch.biz) is handling the international sales.

    The drama - investigating contemporary Romania through the story of two female friends meeting in a monastery - is also the Romanian entry at the Oscar for Best Foreign film 2013.

    Beyond the Hills won awards for Best Script and Best Acting – Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur – at the 2012 Cannes film festival.

    Beyond the Hills was produced by Mungiu through Mobra Films (www.mobrafilms.ro) in coproduction with Why Not Production (www.whynotproductions.fr), Wild Bunch, Les Films du Fleuve (www.lesfilmdufleuve.be), France 3 Cinéma (www.france3.fr) and Mandragora Movies Romania (www.mandragoramovies.com).

    In Romania Mungiu is distributing the film through his distribution company Voodoo Films.
