BUCHAREST: The Cinema City group (www.cinemacity.ro) has announced its first multiplex in the city of Ploiesti, which raises to 14 the number opened by the exhibitor nationwide to date.

Cinema City Ploiesti, which will be opened in Ploieşti Shopping City (www.ploiestishoppingcity.ro) on 7 December, has 2,087 seats and 12 screens, seven of which are outfitted for 3D. All the cinemas have Kinoton and Christie projectors, and Dolby Digital Surround sound. Multiplexes continue to supplant arthouse cinemas nationwide, according to industry surveys.

Cinema City International, the leader on the Romanian market, has opened multiplexes in 11 towns, including the only IMAX cinema in the country, at AFI Cotroceni Bucharest. The company plans to build on its expansion so that Romania will eventually become the territory with the highest number of screens after Poland.

The company, the biggest cinema operator in Israel and also in Central and Eastern Europe, arrived in Romania in 2007. They are trailed in Romania by Hollywood Multiplex.
