Romanian Box Office Grows in 2012

    BUCHAREST: Romanian films saw better domestic results in 2012, with four films topping 20,000 admissions, out of 20 Romanian films which premiered in 2012.

    Of Snails and Men (Tudor Giurgiu's Despre oameni şi melci) produced by Libra Film, and distributed on 40 copies, sold 64,000 tickets with box office of 169,887 EUR / 756,000 RON, but the comedy Sweet Little Lies (Minte-mă frumos) produced by Mediapro Pictures, and distributed on 31 copies led the box office with 215,056 EUR / 957,000 RON and 55,700 admissions.

    Admissions improved compared to the previous years. If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle (Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier) had admissions of 55,858 in 2010, and The Godmother (Naşa) topped Romanian admissions in 2011 with 26,788 tickets sold.

    Three more films had notable results in 2012: Beyond the Hills (Cristian Mungiu's După dealuri, Mobra Films) had 55,000 admissions on 24 copies and Ho Ho Ho 2: A Family Lottery (Jesus del Cerro's Ho Ho Ho 2: O loterie de familieMediapro Pictures) had 42,500 admissions on 33 copies. Lucian Georgescu's Phantom Father (Tatăl-fantomăGeneric Audiovizual) had admissions of 19,755 with 13 copies..

    MediaPro Pictures was the most active production company and sister company MediaPro Distribution was the most active local distribution company with five domestic titles. Transilvania Film distributed four Romanian films in 2012.

    The international box office was topped by Ice Age: Continental Drift (1,568,870 EUR / 6,981,473 RON), followed by Skyfall and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2. The box office has continued to rise in 2012 compared to 2011 due to the opening of new multiplexes. Film premieres rebounded in Romania, 173, compared to 168 in 2011 and 151 in 2010, but still below the 184 premiers in 2009.
