BUCHAREST: Romanian producer/writer/director Anca Damian has begun production on the animated documentary The Magic Mountain, the second part of her Death (and Life) Trilogy which started with the 2011 award winning Crulic - The Path to Beyond/Crulic - Drumul spre dincolo.

The Magic Mountain is the true story of Adam Jacek Winkler, a 20th century Polish Don Quixote.

Winkler (1937-2002) was a photographer and a mountaineer who moved to Paris as a political refugee and fought as Adam Khan in Afghanistan on the side of the mujahideen in the 1980’s. He climbed Mont Blanc, leaving there the solidarity flag with the Afghan people and died while on another solitary climb.

Using the same technique as in Crulic - The Path to Beyond combining animation, photos, film and paper clippings, the film juxtaposes the destiny of the man against the backdrop of history in a story which mixes the tragic and the burlesque. Damian will use Winkler’s photo archive and drawings, along with animation and footage in the style of silent movies.

The Magic Mountain/Muntele magic is produced by Damian through her company Aparte Film in coproduction with Benedicte Thomas and Guillaume de Selle through the Paris-based company Arizona Films Distribution. The budget is 741,714 EUR, Damian told FNE. The project received 95,000 EUR from the National Center for Cinema in April 2013, the biggest production grant for a documentary during that session. The premiere is set for 2014.
