Sitaru wrote the script partially based on his previous short film Cage. It stars actors from his previous films, including Adrian Titieni, Clara Vodă, Ioana Flora, Sergiu Costache, and Gigi Ifrim. The DoP is Adrian Silişteanu.

The film was produced by 4 Proof Film and Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and coproduced by German company unafilm and Titus Kreyenberg. The budget was 732,834 euro. The project was supported by the National Centre for Cinema, Romanian public television, HBO, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Eurimages.

Domestic was shot between 3 November and 7 December 2012.
