The film concerns "a commemoration that never gets to take place," as Puiu describes it, and its characters escape into fiction when overwhelmed by a grief they cannot understand. Inspired by Aurel Rau’s poem The Agathirsoi, the film is produced by Anca Puiu through the company she founded with husband Cristi, Mandragora. Sierra-Nevada is co-producted with Marianne Slot and France's Slot Machine and Sabina Branković and 2006 from Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Budgeted at 700,000-1 million EUR, the film has 170,000 EUR in place, according to Anca Puiu, with funding hoped for from to Eurimages. The shoot calls for 7-10 days of exteriors and up to 20 days of interiors and casting is expected in October. Postproduction abroad is expected with a premiere set for 2014.
