    CLUJ-NAPOCA: Tudor Cristian Jurgiu's first feature Japanese Dog/Câinele japonez was one of the surprises of 2013.

    The film co-written by Ioan Antoci, Gabriel Gheorghe and Tudor Cristian Jurgiu, based on the Antoci's script which had won the Krzysztof Kieslowski Prize at ScripTeast workshop in 2009, the film is produced by Tudor Giurgiu through Libra Film.

    In Japanese Dog/Câinele japonez an old man, widowed by recent floods, and his son who has been living in Japan, see each other again for the first time in 20 years. Their expectations run high, and come close to matching the reality. The brief re-encounter brings hope that the present which the old man receives before parting, a Japanese Robodog, will change both their lives for the better.

    Bogdan Crăciun is the executive producer. Oana Giurgiu is coproducing with Hai-Hui Entertainment. Shooting took place for four months in the summer of 2012. The main actors are Victor Rebengiuc (Medal of Honor/Medalia de onoare), Şerban Pavlu (Everybody in Our Family/Toată lumea din familia noastră) and Kana Hashimoto. Andrei Butică is the DoP.

    Tudor Cristian Jurgiu graduated Drama and Film University of Bucharest in 2011. His short Oli's Wedding/Nunta lui Oli (2009) won Best Fiction Short at Leeds International Film Festival and In the Fishbowl /In acvariu was awarded the 3rd prize at Cinefondation of Cannes IFF in 2013, and also Best short film at Zagreb IFF.

    Japanese Dog received the Opera Prima award ex-aequo and best actor (Victor Rebengiuc) from the Romanian Fillmmakers Union, and also a Gopo award for best actor. The film was also awarded Best Film at Vilnius IFF and it won the 1-2 Competition ex-aequo at Warsaw IFF. The film opened in Romania on 18 October 2013.

    Japanese Dog is sold internationally by the Berlin-based company M-appeal. It is one of the Romanian films selected in the competitive section Romanian Days at Transylvania IFF, 30 May-8 June 2014.
