    Domestic Films Drive Increase in Romanian Box Office Tudor Giurgiu making Why Me? / De ceeu?

    BUCHAREST: Box office for Romanian films was up by approximately 19% in the first half of 2015. The total gross was also higher compared to the first half of 2014.

    According to Cinemagia, Aferim! the Romanian, Bulgarian, Czech and French coproduction, produced by HiFilms, Klas Film, Endorfilm and EZ Films had 72,135 admissions, followed by Tudor Giurgiu’s Why Me?/De ce eu? produced by Libra Film in Romania, and coproduced by Hai-Hui Entertainment, Chouchkov Brothers in Bulgaria, CorLeonis Films in Hungary with 58,423 admissions.

    The most successful Romanian film in the first half of 2014 was Cristina Iacob’s youth comedy #Selfie produced MediaPro Entertainment Romania, in coproduction with ZAZU Film which had 84,010 admissions and cashed in 256,220 EUR/ 1,127,369RON. #Selfie contributed more than half of the local box office last year.

    The total gross was approximately 22.8m EUR /100.5m RONin the first half of 2015 compared to 21.9m EUR / 96m RON in the first half of 2014.

    Seven Romanian titles hit the screens in the first half of 2014 and seven in the first half of 2015. Four domestic premieres are announced for autumn 2015: Radu Muntean’s One Floor Below/Un etaj maijos produced by Multimedia Est on 18 September, Ana Lungu’s The Adventures of a Dutiful Daughter/Aventurile unei fete cuminţi produced by Mandragora on 25 September, Anca Damian’s The Magic Mountain/Muntele magic produced by Aparte Film, and coproduced by Arizona Films Distribution in France, Filmograf in Poland on 9 October and Andrei Cohn’s Back Home/ Acasă la tata produced by Family Film in coproduction Mandragora on 6 November 2015.

    Other domestic premieres might be announced along the way. There were 17 domestic premieres in 2014
