PRODUCTION: Ioana Mischie Develops French/Romanian Debut

    BUCHAREST: Ioana Mischie’s debut feature 237 Years, a bittersweet comedy in the vein of Kusturica's Underground, Wolfgang's Becker's Goodbye, Lenin and Cristian Mungiu’s Tales of the Golden Age (Mobra Films) is set for shooting in 2016.

    The story written by Mischie is inspired by real-life events and follows a group of villagers, who declared themselves to have disabilities in order to avoid paying taxes to the state. Having solidarity as a central theme, the film aims to depict with humor, the survival of innovative traditional communities in a globalized world.

    Alain Goldman is producing through France’s Legende Films, in coproduction with Alma Bacula through the Romanian company Icon Films. Depending on the final shooting location, the budget is estimated by the producers between 1.3m and 1.5 m EUR, Mischie told FNE.

    The script is now completing the final development stage before will applying for production grants. The team will soon launch a prologue of the feature as a short film. Shooting is roughly estimated for the second half of 2016 with the premiere loosely set for 2017.  

    The script has won Best Feature Script Award at The Manaki Script Lab 2015 and Best Feature Script Award at FEST Pitching Forum 2015, and was previously developed at Berlinale’s Script Station 2012, Eastweek Scriptwriting Workshop for New Talents 2014, and the Italy Sundance Screenwriting Lab 2015 among others.

    Mischie graduated from I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. Her short films have been selected in 50 festivals worldwide.
