First Romanian Sales Company Prepares for Cannes

By

BUCHAREST: Ultraviolet Media, the first world sales and film distribution company in Romania, founded in December 2015, is heading to Cannes with four titles to be screened at the festival and the market and 20 shorts, 12 documentaries and six feature fiction films in the company’s portfolio.

The Cannes screening lineup includes both of the Romanian short films selected for the festival’s Official Selection, 4:15 P.M. End of the World by Gabi Șarga and Cătălin Rotaru, selected for the Palme d'Or Official Competition, and All Rivers Run to the Sea by Alexandru Badea, selected for the Cinéfondation competition.

The Cannes lineup also includes two films to be screened in Le Marché du Film, the short film A Night in Tokoriki by Roxana Stroe (screened in the frame of Romanian Short Waves) and a special screening with the help of the Romanian National Film Center for the documentary Cabbage, Potatoes and other Demons by Șerban Georgescu, which is about to wrap postproduction.

According to Gabriela Suciu, Ultraviolet Media associate, the company aims to facilitate the access to markets for European films worldwide. It also works as a distribution company on the Romanian market.

“The development plan of Ultraviolet Media includes distribution and world sales services for feature films, documentaries and short films alike. We are also interested in new media and cross-media projects. We primarily choose our projects for their distribution potential, the novelty of the idea or the artistic approach,” Sucia said.

The company was founded by the board members of Elefant Films Switzerland and Elefant Film Romania, primarily to promote and sell their in-house films, but it soon increased the number of titles it represents and it now has a strong collaboration with the National University of Theatre and Film I.L. Caragiale.

“We add new titles every month and we make sure each of them is presented to festival selection committees, TV buyers and distributors worldwide. We attend all the important film markets,” Gabriela Suciu told FNE.
