BUCHAREST: Menocchio, the new project of Alberto Fasulo, who won the 2013 Rome Film Festival with TIR, will be an Italian/Romanian coproduction and is set to be shot in summer/autumn 2017.

The film focuses on Domenico Scandella, known as Menocchio, a miller and a free spirit of the 16th century, who was burned for being a heretic after being tried by the Inquisition. Alberto Fasulo and Enrico Vecchi wrote the script.

Nadia Trevisan is producing through Italy’s Nefertiti Film in coproduction with Bogdan Crăciun through Romania’s Hai-Hui Entertainment. The budget is 1.5m EUR, of which 20% is already in place, Oana Giurgiu from Hai-Hui Entertainment told FNE.

The project is supported by RAI CINEMA, the Italian Ministry of Culture (MIBACT), the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Fund and the Romanian National Cinema Centre, which gave it a production grant of 125,776 EUR/568,208 RON at the end of May 2016.

It is still to be decided how much of the production will be shot in Romania, since no scouting has been undertaken yet. The premiere is set for summer 2018. The film will be released in Romania by Transilvania Film. No sales agent is attached to the project yet.
