CLUJ-NAPOCA: Radu Jude’s independent documentary Dead Nation / Țara moartă will screen out of competition in the Romanian Days section of the 16th Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) from 8 to 10 June 2017. The festival will run this year from 2 to 11 June.

The film is an essay composed by photos made by Costică Acsinte, texts by Emil Dorian and fragments from the soundtrack of propaganda films from the 1930’s and 1940’s.

Jude used approximately 400 photos from the collection's total of more than 8,000 photos of Costică Acsinte (1897-1984). Acsinte enlisted as a war photographer during WWI and developed not only his own photos but also the plates taken by the Romanian, French and Russian aerial observers. After the war he continued documenting the life of ordinary people.

The film also uses documents from the National Film Archives and the archives of Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company.

The documentary was produced by Ada Solomon through HiFilm Productions with the help of Cezar Mario Popescu, who discovered Acsinte's photos. DoP Marius Panduru is technical advisor.

Jude, who won the Silver Bear at 2015 Berlin Film Festival for Aferim! (Hi Film, Klas Film, endorfilm, Mulberry Development), is expected to start shooting his feature film Is This What You Were Born For?/ Pentru asta te-ai născut? in June 2017. The film will be a Romanian/Czech/French/Bulgarian coproduction between Hi Film Productions, endorfilm, Les Films d’Ici and Klas Film.
