Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time Boosts Domestic Film Admissions in Romania

    BUCHAREST: Admissions to domestic films increased from 280,910 in 2017 to approximately 380,000 in 2018 in Romania due to Stere Gulea’s Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time / Moromeții 2. The awaited sequel of one of the most popular Romanian films of all times scored 181,232 admissions in only seven weeks.

    A total of 23 domestic films were released in Romania in 2018, of which 10 were debuts and six long documentaries. The 19 domestic films released in 2017 included six debut features and three long documentaries.

    Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time / Moromeții 2, produced by Libra Film and distributed by Transilvania Film, is ranked 33rd in the general box office of Cinemagia.ro, and is the most popular domestic film in the last 16 years.

    Another successful Romanian film in 2018 was the documentary Untamed Romania / Romania neîmblânzită by Tom Barton-Humphreys, which was produced by the British/Dutch company Off the Fence, but it was funded by Auchan Retail Romania and the environmental NGO The European Nature Trust. Distributed by Transilvania Film, Untamed Romania is ranked 68th in the general chart with 81,426 admissions.

    The third most successful Romanian film in 2018 is the comedy Pup-o, mă!, a debut feature by Camelia Popa, with 23,252 admissions. Pup-o, mă! is an independent production distributed by Videomix.
