CLUJ-NAPOCA: Stere Gulea’s Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time / Moromeții 2 will screen in the Romanian Days at the 18th Transilvania IFF (31 May - 9 June 2019). The sequel to one of the most popular Romanian films of all times was the most popular domestic film in Romania in 2018 with 184,951 admissions and 529,339 EUR / 2,475,122 RON gross.
The script penned by Gulea, based on the second novel of Moromeții and Marin Preda’s other works, follows the characters from the novel after WWII, when communism is installed in Romania and their whole life changes.
„Moromeții 2 is very challenging because there is on one hand an excellent model – the novel, and on the other the first adaptation which, to my satisfaction, became quite popular. This time the action takes place in more turbulent times, as the new political system brings a lot of concern and anxiety. The world that we knew disappears. This is what propelled me into a sequel, the idea of finishing the odyssey of those characters who survived until the 50s, when nationalisation took place”, Stere Gulea said in a statement during the preparation process.
The whole cast from the first adaptation was replaced. The sequel stars Horațiu Mălăele (as Ilie Moromete), Dana Dogaru (Catrina Moromete) and the newcomer Iosif Paștina (Niculae). The cast includes popular Romanian actors such as Răzvan Vasilescu, George Mihăiță, Andi Vasluianu, Oana Pellea, Ion Caramitru, Gheorghe Visu, Florin Zamfirescu, Marian Râlea, Paul Ipate, Cuzin Toma, Liviu Pintileasa and Dorina Chiriac.
The film was produced by Tudor Giurgiu through Libra Film Productions. The Romanian Film Centre and Studioul Cinematografic al Ministerului Culturii supported the project.
The preparation stage was quite complex, since the house of the Moromete family had to look exactly like 30 years ago and the centre of the village had to be re-built from scratch. The production design team was led by Cristian Niculescu (Closer to the Moon).
Moromeții 2 was shot in the same house and the same village as in 1985, and also in Bucharest and Slatina, in the second half of September 2017. Vivi Drăgan Vasile, one of well-known Romanian cinematographers, once again lensed in his famous black and white style, which made Moromeții unforgetable.
Transilvania Film released the film on 16 November 2018.
Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time was awarded nine trophies, including best feature film, at the Gopo Awards 2019 and four awards, including the trophy for best film, at the 47th Romanian Filmmakers Union (UCIN) gala.
