CLUJ-NAPOCA: Tudor Giurgiu’s fourth feature film Parking aka Above Man, the Woman Soars will screen in the Romanian Days at the 18th Transilvania IFF (31 May - 9 June 2019). This Romanian/Spanish/Czech coproduction is the first film Giurgiu shot outside Romania and it will open the festival as a world premiere on 31 May 2019.

The story follows a Romanian writer, who emigrates illegally to Spain in 2002 and starts working as a night watchman in a car park. When he meets Maria, who plays the guitar in a jazz band, his life changes.

The film is an adaptation of the bestseller Closeness / Apropierea, written by the Romanian writer Marin Mălaicu-Hondrari, and it was shot in Spain and Romania. The film stars young Romanian actor Mihai Smarandache alongside the acclaimed Spanish actors Belén Cuesta, Ariadna Gil and Luis Bermejo.

„The project is complicated, challenging and very different from what I've done so far. I was fascinated by the autobiographical story of Marin Mălaicu-Hondrari and we both tried to recreate the context of the 2000’s, when many Romanians left the country for work, due to their precarious lives, as well as tell a love story that extracts many themes from the writer's prose, such as the nostalgia for homeland, the travel and the power some people have to fantasise, imagine and wish for things that are more or less tangible", Giurgiu said in a statement.

Tudor Giurgiu produced through Romania's Libra Film in coproduction with Spain's Tito Clint Movies and Evolution Films from the Czech Republic. The Romanian Film Centre, the Czech Film Fund and Creative Europe supported the film.

Shooting started on 19 October 2017 and took place in Spain at Cordoba, Sevilla and Candas, and in Romania at Sângeorz-Băi. The film was lensed by the acclaimed Romanian DoP Marius Panduru (Aferim!, HiFilm Productions). The crew included the Spanish production designer Sonia Nolla (The Sisters Brothers) and Fernando García (La Isla Minima) as costume designer.

Parking is set to be released by Transilvania Film in Romania on 14 June 2019.
