FNE Oscar Watch 2020: Romania Selects The Whistlers For Oscar Bid

    BUCHAREST:  The Whistlers / La Gomera by Corneliu Porumboiu has been selected as Romania’s candidate for the 92nd Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award in the best international feature film category. This Romanian/French/German coproduction had its world premiere in the Competition of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

    The Whistlers tells a story about a policeman called Cristi, who reaches the La Gomera island in Spain in order to learn El Silbo, a whistled language used by the inhabitants over a distance of up to five kilometres.

    The main characters are played by Vlad Ivanov, Catrinel Marlon, Rodica Lazăr and Sabin Țambrea.

    The Whistlers has already been sold by MK2 Films in approximately 30 territories including North America. In Romania it will be released by Ro Image 2000 and 42 KM FILM on 13 September 2019.

    The film is produced by Romania’s 42 KM FILM in coproduction with Les Films du Worso, Komplizen Film and Arte Grand Accord. It was supported by the Romanian Film Centre, Eurimages, Arte France Cinéma, Film i Väst, Filmgate Films, Studioul de Creație Cinematografică al Ministerului Culturii Romania, in association with MK2 Films, Arte France and WDR.
