Production: Constantin Popescu feature debut in post-production

By Iulia Blaga

Constantin Popescu (Tales from the Golden Age) is in post-production with his first feature, Portrait of the Fighter as a Young Man, one of the very few Romanian films about the resistance movement during the Communist regime.

The shooting started last year and ended in February 2009. The cast includes over 130 actors and 400 extras. The main actors are Constantin Diţă, Alin Mihalache, Cătălin Babiuc and Alex Potoceanu. Liviu Marghidan (California Dreamin': Endless) is the DOP.

The film is produced by Filmex Film (site under construction), and received a €426.000 grant from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro). The director contributed his own money in order to complete the budget.

The film is to be released this year. Popescu is planning a trilogy, Almost Silence, with Portrait of the Fighter as a Young Man as its first part. The idea came after he read thousands of pages of memoirs and files from the Securitate, and realised he could not make a five hour feature.

Popescu told FNE that he is making the film because those who died in the mountains or in the communist prisons between 1946 and 1958 deserved to be on the screen. "They are an example of dignity not seen these days in Romania," he said.
