Production: Poker begins filming

By Iulia Blaga

Romanian director Sergiu Nicolaescu has started shooting Poker , an adaptation of a successful play written by Adrian Lustig and staged at the Comedy Theater in Bucharest 5 years ago.

Poker is the second comedy in the long career of the popular filmmaker, now 79 years old. It focuses on four male friends, representatives for the social canvas: a doctor without a moral conscience, an unscrupulous politician, a chief of the local mafia, and a businessman who made a fortune in America.

Sergiu Nicolaescu says the subject is "more contemporary than ever and reflects the political reality perfectly," even if it had to be delayed due to other director's projects.

The film is produced by Andrei Boncea and MediaPro Pictures (www.mediapropictures.com), and won a grant of 340,000 Euro (1,250,000 RON) from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) in 2007. Representatives from MediaPro Pictures did not disclose the budget.

The cast includes many of the actors from the staged play: Vladimir Găitan, Valentin Teodosiu, Horaţiu Mălăele, Ion Riţiu, Jojo. Viorel Sergovici is the DOP.

Shooting started the week of October 5 at MediaPro Studios and will continue for 4 weeks mainly at Snagov Palace and other locations in Bucharest.

The premiere is set for spring 2010.
