World According to Ion B. Wins Emmy

    Alexander Nanau's feature-length documentary The World According to Ion B. took the prize in the Arts Programming section of the 38th International Emmy Awards at a ceremony in New York City on 22 November 2010.

    The film was produced by Nanau and by HBO Romania, In a statement, HBO said it was the first time a production from HBO's Central European channels had won an emmy.

    Nanau and HBO representatives attended the ceremony.

    Accepting the award, Carmen Harabagiu, Country Manager of HBO Romania, said, "I thank the jury for their decision, this is first time an HBO Central Europe production has achieved such a prestigious award, and I am delighted to accept the Emmy on behalf of all people who worked so hard to make this outstanding documentary."

    Linda Jensen, CEO of HBO Central Europe, added, "I am very proud of the achievement of HBO Romania, we have a wealth of creative talent in HBO Central Europe, and the award of an International Emmy is proof that our local original programming can be judged together with the leading production talent in the world."

    Nanau's documentary is about a 60 year old homeless man who is recognized as a visionary artist after decades of working in obscurity. creating collages that the artist refers to as his films. Nanau heard about the artist when he was first discovered, and the documentary follows his journey into the world of international fame, creating a portrait of the artist that echoes the surrealistic elements of his collages.
