FESTIVALS: The Thorn Wins 10th Küstendorf Film & Music Festival

    BELGRADE: The Thorn by Michael Alalu was awarded Golden Egg for best film at the 10th jubilee edition of Emir Kusturica’s Küstendorf Film & Music Festival that ran from 14 to 19 January 2017. The festival organises a competition for short films.

    Andrei Maika received the Vilko Filač Award for best cinematography for his work on Lado Kvataniya’s The First. The new Award for Most Poetic Film, introduced by Emir Kusturica this year, went to the Bulgarian director Nikolay Todorov for Before I Sleep.

    The jury of the main competition programme was composed of Geling Yan, Christian Valsamidis and Nikola Ležaić, while Michel Amathieu and István Borbás decided the Vilko Filač Award for best cinematography.

    There was no closing film. Works by Lav Diaz, Emir Kusturica, Gordan Mihić, Ljubiša Kozomara and Živojin Pavlović were honored through a homage and tribute programme, while another programme celebrated emerging talents such as Dane Komljen or Eliza Petkova. Lav Diaz, Liu Jie, Emir Kusturica, Virginie Efira and Antti Jokinen all held workshops as well.
