Slovakia to Propose Film Rebate

By

BRATISLAVA: The Slovak Ministry of Culture plans to submit a draft amendment proposing a 20 percent tax rebate on 15 July with a scheduled start date of January 2014, according to the Slovak newswire service TASR.

The proposal would be in the form of an amendment to the Act on the Audiovisual Fund. The Slovak action follows similar schemes in neighboring Hungary and Czech Republic. Films would have to meet certain criteria through a cultural test, and must spend at least 2 m EUR on filming costs in Slovakia. The proposal suggests that there would not be a cap on the rebate funds available, and that filmmakers can request the rebate at any time. Eligible projects would include feature films (fiction, animated, and documentary) over 70 minutes in length and series of over 40 minutes in length.
