KARLOVY VARY: Slovak documentary director Ivan Ostrochovsky will make his feature fiction debut with a Slovak/Czech road-movie drama lightened by quirky touches, Goat.

The 800,000 EUR film received 250,000 EUR from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund (AVF), 3 m CZK from the Czech Film Fund, 1.8 m CZK in cash and in-kind services from Czech TV, and 30,000 from MEDIA in slate funding.

Ostrochovsky is also producing for sentimentalfilm. The Czech producer Jiri Konecny for endorfilm.

Ostrochovsky told FNE the main character is acted by someone he has known since childhood and the story of the film is based on an episode in his life. “He was the youngest of nine kids, and in order to survive he was fed goat’s milk,” Ostrochovsky told FNE, explaining the character’s unusual nickname. Goat, the Romany boxer Peter Balaz who in real life was a contender at the Olympics in Atlanta, needs to make money when his girlfriend decides to have an abortion and decides to return to the boxing ring. Ostrochovsky said he had to direct Balaz, a non-actor, by having him “not” act, recreating scenes close to reality.

The film is moving into post-production with a January 2015 release planned.
