BRATISLAVA: Juraj Nvota’s Slovak-Czech coproduction Hostage/Rukojemník had the best opening weekend for a domestic feature film since the beginning of the year.

The film was released by the Slovak distribution company Barracuda Movie on 8 January 2015 and had 3,231 admissions after its first weekend. A total of 10,982 viewers have seen it so far.

Hostage by Juraj NvotaThis tragicomic story about the son of a local communist officer and his friend whose parents emigrated to the West, received four nods for the Czech Lion awards. The film was produced by Alef Film & Media Group in coproduction with Filmové Ateliéry, Czech Television, Slovak Radio and Television, UN FILM and Filmpark. It was supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund and the Czech Film Fund.

Producer Marian Urban from Alef Film & Media Group told FNE that the distribution strategy came from the Czech side and that the Czech distributor pre-bought the film during preproduction. "It was our Czech distributor CinemArt that decided to release the film in Slovak cinemas through Barracuda Movie. We appreciated the trust and support of the Czech distributor and therefore let them choose their partner to release the film in the Slovak Republic", says Urban.
