BRATISLAVA: The 4m EUR two-episode biopic Maria Theresia by the Austrian director Robert Dornhelm is moving to postproduction. This Slovak / Czech / Austrian / Hungarian coproduction is set to be broadcast on RTVS during the Christmas holiday in 2017. This is the biggest coproduction in the history of Slovakia’s public television.
“The shooting of Maria Theresia’s coronation in Bratislava was one of the most challenging parts of the production. There were 220 extras on set, 13 costume designers and 24 make-up artists from Bratislava, Brno and Prague“, said Vladimír Burianek, the producer from RTVS.
The miniseries is produced by Beta Film (Germany), MR Film (Austria) and Maya Production (CZ) and MAYA Production (SK) and coproduced by four European public broadcasters: Slovak RTVS , Czech TV, Austrian ORF, Hungarian MTVA. The production is one of the first to benefit from the new Slovak tax incentives with a 20% cash rebate. The total budget of 4 m EUR is partially covered by 991,200 EUR from RTVS and 400,000 EUR from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund.
Principal photography took place in the Czech castle of Kroměříž, the historical centres of Bratislava and Vienna, and also in Italian Tuscany.Shooting took 46 days.
The main characters are played by the Austrian actress Marie Luise Stockinger as Maria Theresia and the Czech actor Vojtěch Kotek as her husband Franz Stephan von Lothringen. The cast includes the renowned Slovak actors Alexander Bárta and Tatiana Pauhofová. The DoP Tomáš Juríček, the editor Marek Kráľovský and the costume designer Ján Kocman are also Slovak.
Robert Dornhelm is well-known for his Oscar nominated documentary The Children of Theatre Street (1977) which he co-directed together with Earle I. Mack.
