LJUBLJANA: Two years after a popular and intriguing teaser posted on YouTube, student Oscar nominee Žiga Virc is shooting his awaited docu-fiction Houston, We Have a Problem, based on the urban myth of Yugoslavia selling its secret space programme to the US in March 1961 followed two months later by president Kennedy announcing that the USA would go to the moon.

The story of the film is based and inspired by numerous real events and facts, and freshly discovered archives are to be used.

"On the very solid base of real events and unpublished archives and documents, we are adding fiction so there will be enough hints for the audience to understand the nature of the film. The newly discovered archives are connected to the former Yugoslav president Tito, and we are talking about the former Yugoslavian archives in Belgrade," scriptwriter Bostjan Virc told FNE.

Žiga Virc was nominated for an Oscar for his short student film Trieste Is Ours in 2010. Houston, We Have a Problem is his debut feature. The creative team behind this project is composed of Žiga Virc and his uncle, Bostjan Virc, supported by the family-run company Studio Virc. The film is produced by Žiga Virc and Bostjan Virc through Slovenia's Studio Virc in coproduction with Siniša Jurićić through Croatia's Nukleus Film and Ingmar Trost through Germany's Sutor Kolonko. The budget is 600,000 EUR, of which more than 80% is already secured, Bostjan Virc told FNE.

Institutions backing the project include the MEDIA Programme, Slovenian Film Centre, Viba Film, Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Eurimages, RTV Slovenija. Houston, We Have a Problem was pitched at the NEXT programme at the Cannes Film Market.

Half of shooting is already completed. Principal photography started in May 2014 and it will wrap June 2014, with a second shooting round in September 2014. Including an interview shot in December, there are more than 40 shooting days.

The premiere is set for spring 2015, and "it will be supported by an extensive cross-media campaign," Bostjan Virc told FNE.
