The film is focusing on the history of the Yugoslav basketball from 1947, when the first city derby between Crvena zvezda and Partizan was played in Belgrade, to the World Cup in 1970, when the national team defeated the US team and won the first gold medal. The main characters are played by Strahinja Blažić, Miloš Biković, Aleksandar Radojičić, Marko Janketić with John Savage playing the FIBA official William Jones.
The story about the founders of the famous Yugoslav Basketball School is based on real events and is dedicated to the personalities who have contributed to the emergence and development of basketball in their country.
We Will Be the World Champions is produced by Serbia's Intermedia Network in coproduction with Croatia's Kinorama and Slovenia's Perfo Production . The film was supported by RTS – Serbian Broadcasting Corporation, The Ministry of Youth and Sports of Serbia, the Croatian Audiovisual Center and Slovenian Film Center with 70,000 EUR. The total budget was 2,428,879 EUR, Studio Viba Film contributes with services, coproducer Ales Pavlin told FNE.
The film has already been released in the Slovenian cinemas by Fivia in March 2015.
