Slovenia Selects The Tree as Its Oscar Bid

    LJUBLJANA: Sonja Prosenc’s debut feature The Tree has been selected by the Association of Slovenian Filmmakers (DSFU) as the country's candidate for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

    “Our jury of professionals took into account the integrity and quality of the means of expression in the film and recognized The Tree as the most comprehensive film work,” producer Ida Weiss, the president of the jury, told FNE.

    The Tree/Drevo is a drama centered on a family that finds its safety behind the walls of their own house. As time goes by, their shelter slowly turns into a prison, but nothing can keep the children from yearning to be free.

    The film starring Katarina Stegnar was produced by Zavod Mono O in coproduction with Radiotelevizija Slovenia, Nuframe, Staragara. It was co-funded by the Slovenian Film Center. The Tree had its world premiere in the East of the West section of the Karlovy Vary IFF 2014. It was released in Slovenian cinemas by MONOO in October 2014 and is still runs in art house cinemas.

    Prosenc, who graduated in Journalism with a major in Cultural Studies, is the founder of the film production house MONOO. She is currently working on her new project History of Love, developed at the MIDPOINT script development workshops.
