LJUBLJANA: The docu-fiction Houston, We Have a Problem! by Žiga Virc is Slovenia‘s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 89th Academy Awards. The film is a Slovenian/Croatian/German coproduction.

In March 1961 Yugoslavia sold its secret space programme to the US. Two months later Kennedy announced that the USA would go to the Moon. This is an urban myth that millions of people want to believe in. This myth is explored through the character of Ivan, a senior engineer in the alleged Yugoslav space programme, using some first shown documentary materials.

Houston, We Have a Problem! / Houston, imamo problem! was produced by Studio Virc in coproduction with Nukleus Film and Sutor Kolonko. It was supported by the Slovenian Film Center, RTV Slovenia, FS Viba, MEDIA Programme, Eurimages, Croatian Audiovisual Center, HBO Europe, WDR Germany and Doha Film Institute.

The film won the Vesna Award for Best Picture at the 19th Slovenian Film Festival, which ran in Portorož from 13 to 18 September 2016. It was also awarded there for best actor and editing.

The five nominees in the Foreign Language category of the 89th Academy Awards will be announced on 24 January 2017. The Oscars ceremony will take place on 26 February 2017.
