Slovenes mourn slain journalist

By Matevz Rudolf

The Slovenian and international independent film community were shocked by news that film critic Nika Bohinc (1979) was slain in her home on September 1.

Bohinc and her partner Alexis Tioseco (1981), a Filipino film critic, were killed as their home was robbed in Manila, the Philippines.

Bohinc was freelance film critic and editor-in-chief of Slovenian film magazine Ekran between 2006 and 2008 (www.ekran.si), a member of the programme board for two Slovenian film festivals: Ljubljana International Film Festival (www.liffe.si) and Isola Cinema Film Festival (www.isolacinema.org); and president of FIPRESCI Slovenia. She had been working as European Content Provider for SEA Images, supported by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) (http://sea-images.asef.org).

According to Slovenian cultural minister Majda Širca, who conveyed condolences to her parents, "This is a great lost. With the loss of Nika, the Slovenian film societ lost an active, bold and intellectual person."
