The most nominations for the Czech Lion Awards have been obtained by the films Masaryk (Prominent Patient), Anthropoid and Učitelka (The Teacher)

    The Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) has revealed the nominations for the 24th Czech Lion Annual Awards. This year the academics could choose from the 71 feature films, animated films and documentary features which had been distributed in the year of 2016. The films can be awarded the statuette of Czech Lion in 15 statutory categories. The most nominations throughout all the categories have been obtained by the films Masaryk (Prominent Patient), Anthropoid and Učitelka (The Teacher). The awarding ceremony will take place in Rudolfinum on 4th March 2017. The gala evening will be newly hosted by Adela Banášová.

    The members of CFTA had been voting about the nominations in the film categories for the 24th Czech Lion Annual Awards by the 13th January 2017. The total number of 122 academics had been choosing from 42 feature and animated films and 29 documentary features. The nominees for the Czech Lion awards are dominated by the biographical drama Prominent Patient directed by Julius Ševčík with its 14 nominations. The film Anthropoid directed by Sean Ellis gained 12 nominations. The third highest number of nominations (9) went to the drama called The Teacher by Jan Hřebejk. It is closely followed by the film I, Olga Hepnarova, which got 8 nominations.

    In the category of the best film the following five films have been nominated: Anthropoid (directed by Sean Ellis), I, Olga Hepnarova(directed by Tomáš Weinreb, Petr Kazda), Prominent Patient (directed by Julius Ševčík), The Teacher (directed by Jan Hřebejk) and Family Film(directed by Olmo Omerzu).The Czech Lion Award for the best documentary feature can be awarded to one of these films – Brother Karel (directed by Krystyna Krauze), FC Roma (directed by Tomáš Bojar and Rozálie Kohoutová), Normal Autistic Film (directed by Miroslav Janek), Helena’s Law(directed by Petra Nesvačilová) and Doomed Beauty(directed by Helena Třeštíková and Jakub Hejna).

    The awards in the area of television production will be awarded for the second time, this year in two categories. Altogether four broadcasters recommended their deeds – Czech Television, HBO Europe, TV Nova and TV Prima. In each category, three projects with the highest number of votes from the academics will be revealed in the course of February. The winners in the categories of the best television film or miniseries and best television drama series will be announced during the ceremonial gala evening on 4th March.

    The category of the best television documentary or series underwent some changes as it has been joined with the category of the best documentary feature. In the selection of the films in this category there are all the films that have been presented to the public during the year of 2017 either by public projections or by television broadcasting. The presidium of CFTA will also present the award for a Unique Contribution to Czech Film during the ceremonial gala evening.

    Apart from the revelation of the nominations, the winners in the non-statutory categories were also announced at the CFTA press conference. The award for the best film poster was presented to Lukáš Veverka, the designer of the poster for the film I, Olga Hepnarova. The director Sean Ellis obtained the award of film fans for his film Anthropoid.

    The Czech Lion Award for the best actress in a leading role can be obtained by the following actresses – Michalina Olszanská for the film I, Olga Hepnarova, Lenka Vlasáková for the film We Are Never Alone, Vanda Hybnerová for her role in the film Family Film, Eliška Balzerová for the movie Tiger Theory and Zuzana Mauréry for the film The Teacher. The award for the best actress in a supporting role can go to – Klára Melíšková for the film I, Olga Hepnarova, Simona Stašová for the role in the film The Devil’s Mistress, Arly Jover for the movie Prominent Patient, Daniela Kolářová for the movie The Noonday Witch and Zuzana Kronerová for the role in the film Red Captain.

    The Czech Lion Award for the best actor in a leading role will belong to one of the following nominees – Ivan Trojan for the film Angel of the Lord 2, Cillian Murphy for Anthropoid, Karel Roden for the role in the film Masaryk, Karel Roden for We Are Never Alone and Jiří Bartoška
    for the role in the movie Tiger Theory. The winner in the category of the best actor in a supporting role will be one of the following actors - Boleslav Polívka for the role in the film Angel of the Lord 2, Jamie Dornan for Anthropoid, Oldřich Kaiser and Hanns Zischler for their acting performances in the film Prominent Patient or Miroslav Hanuš for We Are Never Alone.

    At the gala evening the award for the best director will be obtained by one of these nominees – Sean Ellis for the film Anthropoid, Tomáš Weinreb and Petr Kazda for the movie I, Olga Hepnarova, Julius Ševčík for the directing of the film Prominent Patient, Olmo Omerzu for Family Film or Jan Hřebejk for the film The Teacher.

    The ceremonial presentation of the 24th Annual Awards of the Czech Film and Television Academy will take place in Rudolfinum in Prague on 4th March 2017. The gala evening will be newly hosted by Adela Banášová. The whole evening will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. by the CT1 channel.

    Czech Lion

    The Czech lion is a prestigious film award that has been presented since 1993. The films are assessed based on the voting of the members of the Czech Film and Television Academy. The press conference with the announcement of the nominations for the 24th Czech Lion Annual Awards will be held on 18th January 2017. The ceremonial gala evening will take place on Saturday 4th March 2017 in the Dvořák’s Hall of Rudolfinum and it will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. by the Czech Television CT1 channel.

    About the Czech Film and Television Academy:

    The Czech Film and Television Academy was founded in 1995 and in 2013 it was transformed into a registered association. Its main aim is to support and promote Czech cinematographic art in the Czech Republic as well as abroad and create conditions for the development of Czech film. Since 1993 it has been awarding the most prestigious Czech film award – the Czech Lion Award and nominates Czech films or documentary features for foreign film awards. At the moment the CFTA consists of 277 members.
