FNE at Connecting Cottbus 2018: The Ugly Mandarine

    COTTBUS: Producer Michal Kracmer of Analog Vision and director Piaayu Xie presented the Czech/Slovak project The Ugly Mandarine at the 20th edition of Connecting Cottbus, which took place 8-9 November 2018.

    The project won the MIDPOINT coco Award at Midpoint Feature Launch.

    The film is the story of an Asian music student struggling to obtain a permit that will allow her to stay in Prague with her Slovak girlfriend. The film will be shot primarily in English. The Ugly Mandarine is Xie’s debut feature film. She is a 2018 graduate from FAMU with an MFA in Directing.

    The 720,000 EUR production received 20,000 EUR development support from the Czech Film Fund. The Slovak coproducer is Hitchhiker Cinema. One year was spent on developing the project, which is now in early pre-production. Shooting is planned for November 2019. The producers are seeking another European coproducer, preferably from France or Germany, as well as possible Asian partners.
