The script co-written by Mitić and Croatian director/screenwriter Ognjen Sviličić tells the story of Sara, a 17-year-old girl, who is grappling with societal pressures and personal challenges. As Sara confronts trauma and secrets, the film delves into themes of identity, sexuality and societal expectations.
“This film is focused on high school students and teenagers, a critical and vulnerable demographic. In a world saturated with social media, where shocking values prevail, 17 challenges viewers to confront the uncomfortable truths of adolescence,” said director Kosara Mitić in a statement.
The film features a cast of 25 teenagers, representing an entire class on a school trip. Lead cast members include Eva Kostić, Martina Danilovska and Petar Manić.
The film is produced by Tomi Salkovski and Kristijan Burovski through Black Cat Production in coproduction with Miroslav Mogorović through Art & Popcorn (Serbia) and Vlado Bulajić and Lija Pogačnik through December (Slovenia).
The North Macedonia Film Agency (providing 373,983 EUR / 23 m MKD), Film Center Serbia (with 59,655 EUR / 7 m RSD) and the Slovenian Film Centre (with 60,000 EUR) are supporting the project.
The shooting started on 25 April 2024 in the Museum of Macedonia and will continue on various locations in Skopje until the end of May 2024.
