The Closing Gala and the Awards Ceremony of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival were presented by Ceyda Düvenci and Mert Fırat, and were streamed live on NTV. After the short film on the festival was screened, prominent Turkish actress Hülya Koçyiğit and actor Nejat İşler passed their remarks on the ongoing Emek Movie Theatre process.

 

Prominent director Peter Weir, director of Gallipoli, Dead Poets Society, Green Card and The Truman Show, and also the Head of Jury for International Golden Tulip Competition, was presented with the Honorary Award of the festival. The Istanbul Film Festival Director Azize Tan presented the award to Peter Weir.

 

International Golden Tulip Competition Awards

 

Jury of the Golden Tulip International Competition was presided over by director Peter Weir, and composed of the Screen International magazine film critic Mark Adams, director Sebastian Lelio, actress Simin Fatemeh Motamed Arya and director Malgoska Szumowska. 13 films competed for the Golden Tulip Award in the International Competition this year.

 

The Golden Tulip in memory of Şakir Eczacıbaşı in the International Competition of the Istanbul Film Festival is supported with a total monetary award of 25,000 €. 10,000 € of the total award is presented to the director of the film which wins the Golden Tulip, 10,000 € is presented to the Turkish distributor of the film and 5,000 € is presented to the director of the film which won the Special Jury Prize.

 

The Golden Tulip in memory of Şakir Eczacıbaşı in the International Competition was given to WHAT RICHARD DIDdirected by Lenny Abrahamson. Monetary award of the Eczacıbaşı Group was presented by Sacit Basmacı,Eczacıbaşı Holding General Manager and the Eczacıbaşı Group's Executive Vice PresidentHead Comptroller & Legal Affairs. 

 

Special Jury Prize in the Golden Tulip International Competition was given to the CAMILLE CLAUDEL 1915 by Bruno Dumont.

 

National Golden Tulip Competition Awards

 

Jury of the Golden Tulip National Competition was presided over by director Tayfun Pirselimoğlu, and composed of Jean-François Bourgeot, Director of the Montpellier International Mediterranean Film Festival; Bruno Deloye, Director of TV stations Cine+Club, Classic&Star and Famiz; painter Komet and actress Nihal Yalçın. This year 10 films, two of which had their Turkey premiere and six of them had world premiere, competed in the Golden Tulip National Competition.

 

The Golden TulipBest Film Award was given toSEN AYDINLATIRSIN GECEYİ / THOU GILD’ST THE EVENby Onur Ünlü. The award was presented to the producers of the film Orkun Ünlü and Funda Alp by the Head of Jury Tayfun Pirselimoğlu.

 

The Golden TulipBest Director Award was given ASLI ÖZGE for her film Hayatboyu / Lifelong. Tayfun Pirselimoğlu presented the award to Aslı Özge.

 

A monetary award of 150,000 TL will be presented to the producer of the Best Film. 50,000 TL will be awarded to the Best Director Award in the National Competition.

 

The Special Prize of the Jury was awardedto DEVİR / THE CYCLEby Derviş Zaim. The winner of the Special Prize of the Jury in memory ofOnat Kutlar will be given a 30,000 USD monetary award by Efes, theme sponsor of the “Turkish Cinema” section of the festival. Also the producer of the film, DERVİŞ ZAİM was presented with the award by Nihan Erçetin, Efes Turkey Brand PR and Communication Planning Manager, and famous Mexican director Carlos Reygadas.

 

The Golden Tulip Best Actress Award was given to SEMA POYRAZ for her performance in Özür Dilerim / Forgive Me. National Competition Jury Member Komet presented the award to the actress.

 

The Golden Tulip Best Actor Award was given to ERCAN KESAL for his performance in Yozgat Blues. Ercan Kesal was presented the award by National Competition jury member Nihal Yalçın.

 

A monetary award of 10,000 TL will be given to winners of Best Actress and Best Actor Awards.

 

The Golden Tulip Best Screenplay Award waspresented to ONUR ÜNLÜ for his screenplay for Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi / Thou Gild’st The Even. Theaward was presented by the jury member Jean-François Bourgeot.

 

The Golden Tulip Best Director of Photography Award was presented to EMRE ERKMEN for his work in Hayatboyu / Lifelong.

 

The Golden Tulip Best Music Award was given to MURAT BAŞARAN for his work for Soğuk / Cold. The award was presented by Aylin Aslım,one of the best singers of Turkish rock.

 

The Golden Tulip Best Editing Award was presented to EMRE BOYRAZ for his work for Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi / Thou Gild’st The Even. National Competition jury member Bruno Deloye presented the award to Emre Boyraz.

 

Seyfi Teoman Best Debut Film Award

 

Seyfi Teoman Best Debut Film Award, presented for the first time this year in memoriam of the director and producer Seyfi Teoman, whom we lost in at a young age, was also announced in the ceremony. Jury members for the award were director Emin Alper, actress Saadet Aksoy and film critic Rüdiger Suchsland.

 

All debut films from Turkey in the Golden Tulip International and National Competitions, under the Out of Competition and New Turkish Cinema titles of the Turkish Cinema section of the festival, as well as the Human Rights in Cinema section were nominated to the award. The award winner is presented with a monetary award of 30,000 TL through CMYLMZ Fikirsanat. Deniz Akçay Katıksızreceived the award for KÖKSÜZ / NOBODY’S HOME, which was presented by Cem Yılmaz and jury member Emin Alper.

 

Film Award of the Council of Europe (FACE)

 

The Human Rights Jury of the competitioncomposed of director Anca Damian, winner of theSpecial Jury Prize last year in the scope of the Human Rights in Cinema competition with her film Crulic – The Path to Beyond; Philippe Boillat, Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe; director Dan Setton, and Roberto Olla Executive Director of Eurimages.

The FACE Award and a monetary award of 10,000 €presented with thecooperation of Council of Europe and Eurimages weregiven toSYNGUÉ SABOUR / PATIENCE STONE by Atiq Rahimi. Anca Damian announced the award for the film and the award was presented to international distributor of the film Natalie Jeung, representative of Le Pacte, by Adrian Butler, Council of Europe Head of Programme Office.

Special Mention Prize in the Human Rights in Cinema Competition was presented to EPIZODA U ZIVOTU BERACA ZELJEZA / AN EPISODE IN THE LIFE OF AN IRON PICKER by Danis Tanovic and JISEUL by Muel O.

 

 

 

 

FIPRESCI National and International Competition Awards

 

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) gave two awards in the Istanbul Film Festival also this year. The FIPRESCI Award in the National Competition was presented to SEN AYDINLATIRSIN GECEYİ / THOU GILD’ST THE EVENdirected by Onur Ünlü and to CAMILLE CLAUDEL 1915 by Bruno Dumont in the International Competition. Jury member Lesley Chow announced the award winning films.

 

The FIPRESCI Jury was presided over by Dana Linssen (The Netherlands),andcomposed of Lesley Chow (Australia), Jon Asp (Sweden), Guilhem Caillard (Canada) and Berke Göl and Burcu Aykar (Turkey).

Radikal Newspaper People’s Choice Awards

 

People’s Choice Awards sponsored by the Radikal Newspaper and determined by the votes of the festival audience were presented to the International and National Competition films. DOM S BASHENKOY / HOUSE WITH A TURRETby Eva Neymann in the International Competition and KÖKSÜZ / NOBODY’S HOMEby Deniz Akçay Katıksız in the National Competition were given to People’s Choice Awards by Erkan Aktuğ, Radikal Newspaper Chief of Culture and Art. The awards were presented to the directors by the Seyfi Teoman Best Debut FilmJury member Saadet Aksoy.

 

Cineuropa.org Award

 

Chair of Cineuropa.org Valerio Caruso and Montreal Cinemania Film Festival Programming Coordinator,film critic Guilhem Caillard gave the Cineuropa.org Award for the first time in the Istanbul Film Festival. Cineuropa.org Award, which isgiven to a film that besides having indisputable artistic qualities also brings out the idea of dialogue and integration, was presented to THE ATTACK by Ziad Doueiri in theHuman Rights in Cinema section.

 

After the Awards Ceremony of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival, guests watched WHAT RICHARD DID by Lenny Abrahamson awarded with the Golden Tulip in the International Competition.

 

Closing events of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival continued with the closing party host by Efes in The Sofa Hotel with the participation of national and international guests of the festival, actors and directors of the films competing for the Golden Tulip as well as significant names of Turkish cinema.

INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN TULIP COMPETITION

The International Jury of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival presided over by director Peter Weir, and composed of film critic Mark Adams, director Sebastian Lelio, actress Simin Fatemeh Motamed Arya and director Malgoska Szumowska decided to give;

 

• The Golden TulipAward in memoryof Şakir Eczacıbaşı to WHAT RICHARD DID directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Ireland); for being “a powerful, professional and provocative film that resonated with the jury members, skillfully blending a series of fine performances with subtle storyline and a clear and effortless visual style.”

• Special Jury Prize to CAMILLE CLAUDEL 1915 by Bruno Dumont for being “a beautifully sustained film enhanced by a mesmeric performance by Juliette Binoche. They jury admired Bruno Dumont’s artistic rigour and command of his story.”

The Eczacıbaşı Group will distribute a total monetary award of 25,000 € as follows: the director of the film which wins the Şakir Eczacıbaşı Golden Tulip Award will receive 10,000 €; the Turkish distributor of the winning film will receive 10,000 €; the director of the film which won the Special Jury Prize will receive 5,000 €.

SEYFİ TEOMAN BEST DEBUT FILM AWARD

 

The Seyfi Teoman Best Debut Film Award was presented the first time this year. The jury, composed of director Emin Alper, actress Saadet Aksoy and film critic Rüdiger Suchsland judged all debut films from Turkey in the Golden Tulip International and National Competitions, under the Out of Competition and New Turkish Cinema titles of the Turkish Cinema section of the festival, as well as the Human Rights in Cinema section. The jury decided to give the Seyfi Teoman Best Debut Film Award to:

 

KÖKSÜZ / NOBODY’S HOME byDeniz Akçay Katıksız in the National Competition section. “This is a wonderfully excessive and - in a brilliant way - hysterical film, which manages in a sovereign way the delicate balance between the banality and the extreme. NOBODY’S HOME has it all, what cinema needs: original filmmaking, strongly drawn characters and an impressive dramatic structure. The direction of Deniz Akçay Katıksız is audacious and consistent, open for spontaneity and in the same time always in control. This director knows exactly what she is doing. We are looking forward to her future cinema-work.”

 

The winner of the award will receive 30,000 TL through CMYLMZ Fikirsanat.

 

THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE FILM AWARD, “FACE”

The FACE Award (Council of Europe Film Award) is presented to the director of a film that arises public awareness and interest in human rights issues. The award includes a sculpture in bronze and a cash prize of 10,000 €. It is awarded as part of the Human Rights in Cinema section of the festival. The Human Rights Jury of the 32nd Istanbul Film Festival composed of director Anca Damian, winner of last year’s FACE Competition Special Mention; Philippe Boillat, Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe; director Dan Setton; and Roberto Olla, Executive Director of Eurimages decided to give;

• The FACE AWARD toSYNGUÉ SABOUR / PATIENCE STONEby Atiq Rahimi (Afghanistan-France-Germany)for being a film which “denounces violence against women by shedding light on a grim and complex reality, which would otherwise remain hidden. The director has risen magnificently to the near impossible task of turning the original book into a film notable for its outstanding aesthetic qualities”;

 

• The Special Mention ex aequoto EPIZODA U ZIVOTU BERACA ZELJEZA / AN EPISODE IN THE LIFE OF AN IRON PICKER by Danis Tanovic (Bosnia-Herzegovina-France-Slovenia) for being a film which “brings to the fore a simple and touching story of poverty and discrimination. Through an innovative, near-documentary approach, the director depicts an episode in the life of a family deprived of its fundamental rights” and JISEUL by Muel O (South Korea) “for being a film set in the Korean conflict of 1948, but which bears a message which is shivery relevant today. In this brilliantly shot, black & white film, the director paints a rainbow of human qualities and shortcomings against a background of the absurdity of war.”
